Localized Hyperhidrosis
|
|
|
Focal hyperhidrosis affects about 7.8 million Americans. Unlike generalized hyperhidrosis, it can be inherited. Focal hyperhidrosis usually begins in adolescence but it can also begin in childhood. Focal hyperhidrosis becomes active by emotional stimuli but the occasional onset of focal hyperhidrosis in the neonatal period is evidence that this is far more than an emotional disorder. It affects the areas such as the scalp, face, hands, trunk and thigh, feet and in about 30-40% of cases, the armpits (axillary). Potential causes of focal hyperhidrosis include:
- Emotional stimuli
- Anxiety
- Olfactory
- Gustatory
- Neurological lesions
- Frey syndrome
- Spinal cord injury
