Hyperhidrosis Types

There are two common types of hyperhidrosis:

Hyperhidrosis or excessive sweating can be generalized or localized, and secondary or primary. Secondary or generalized hyperhidrosis can be due to an underlying systemic disease or due to medication use. Secondary hyperhidrosis is sweating that occurs due to disease such as hyperthyroidism or due to medications.

Focal hyperhidrosis is often primary and triggered by emotional stimuli, although it is not generally a psychiatric disease. Primary or focal hyperhidrosis usually begins in adolescence or childhood and localized to the hands, axillae, or feet. Therefore, it is also known as localized hyperhidrosis.
