Flea allergy dermatitis is a form of dermatitis found commonly in cats and is caused by flea bites, the cat gets flea allergy by the saliva of the flea. It becomes itchy and causes to the development of secondary skin infections.
Diagnosis
some other medical problems can lead to similar symptoms. Other disorders that must be excluded are:
- Food allergy
- Atopy
- Trauma or other cause of local skin irritation
- Sarcoptic mange
- Cheyletiellosis (a mite infestation)
Some pets may have more than one medical problem so it is important to know what problems they have. In some cases the pets face multiple problems because of flea irritation as it encourages scratching or biting which can cause a "hot spot") and secondary bacterial skin infection may also follow.
Treatment
Treatment of flea allergy dermatitis can be divided into three phases:
Prevention:
The most important part of treatment is preventing flea bites. This can be done with medication with aggressive flea control.
Treatment of secondary skin infections:
Antibiotics can be used to treat secondary skin infections that are triggered by the flea allergy.
Treating the flea allergy:
It is necessary that your cat is comfortable and for that steroids could be used to help the problem.
All these steps can help make sure that your cat has a healthy skin and is rid of any dangerous and uncomfortable skin allergies.
