About Spider Veins

 

Spider Veins are small blood vessels near the surface of the skin and usually measures only a few millimeters (1-3mm). They can develop anywhere on the body but generally it appears on the legs and near the ankles. However, it can also be seen on the face around nose and chin. Spider Veins when become large cause heaviness in the legs, cramps and itchiness. They look a bit like bluish, purple or red short, fine lines, "starburst" clusters or form netting like a spider's web just below the surface of the skin.

The terms Spider Veins, telangiectasias, and broken capillaries are often used interchangeably. Spider Veins although pose no health hazard but may cause aching or burning in the legs.

Who gets Spider Veins?

They occur in both men and women, but occur most frequently in women. The cause of Spider Veins could primarily be genetic, but hormones may play a role in their development as they have been noticed more frequently after puberty or during pregnancy. Family history of the problem can also increase one's tendency to develop Spider Veins.
